On July 22nd 1855, the boundary lines of Coffey County where established by the legislature and was named after Col. A.M. Coffey, Col. A.M. Coffey never lived in Coffey County but was a member of the Territorial Legislature of 1855. Burlington was not always the county seat, originally the county seat was in LeRoy, But Feb 12th, 1958 the county seat was temporarily moved from LeRoy to Burlington. Nov 25th 1865, after continuous votes Burlington was declared the county seat by the board of commissioners. March 1971, KGE and Kansas City Power and Light Company signed an agreement to build a nuclear plant, In January 1973 , the agreement was finalized, On september 3, 1985 Wolf Creek was declared to be in commercial operation. Wolf Creek is the only nuclear power plant in Kansas. Coffey County is home to the towns of : Burlington-pop. 2,790 established 1855 Gridley-pop. 360 established 1886 LeRoy-pop. 560 established 1868 Lebo-pop. 1,000 established Oct 6. 1886 New Strawn-pop. 500 established 1871 Waverly-pop. 618 established 1887 Living in Coffey County Tax Rate Living in Coffey County
