Babysitter Training Tue, June 12 8:30a-2:30p $35. Registration ends June 4th. For 11 to 15 year olds to get the knowledge, skills, and confidence to care for infants and school-aged children. Students learn to respond to emergencies and illness with first aid, rescue breathing and other appropriate care; make decisions under pressure; feed, diaper, and care for infants. Optional Babysitter First Aid Kit is available for an additional $10. Register via e-mail or call 620.364.5547

First Aid/AED/Adult CPR Sat, June 23 9a-3:30p $50. Registration ends June 15th. In addition to CPR, this course includes training in using an automated external defibrillator on a victim of sudden cardiac arrest. Updated with latest science for first aid, CPR, and emergency cardiovascular care. Meets OSHA First Aid guidelines. Includes a 30-minute lunch break. Register via e-mail or call 620.364.5547

Family Caregiving Overview Family Caregiving is designed for people who help provide care for an elderly or chronically ill loved one. It's an easy way for you to build caregiving skills and learn how to reduce stress, better understand legal, financial and medical issues, and balance work and home responsibilities. You will also learn more about local resources and support.

   Family Caregiving Session 1 Thu, June 14 6-9:30p $20. Registration ends June 7th. Session topics: Assisting with personal care, positioning and helping your loved one move, general caregiving skills, home safety. Register via e-mail or call 620.364.5547

   Family Caregiving Session 2 Thu, June 21 6-9:30p $20. Registration ends June 7th. Session topics: Healthy eating, legal and financial issues, caring for a loved one with dementia or alzheimer's, caring for the caregiver. Register via e-mail or call 620.364.5547

Disaster Services Training--Client Casework Part 2 Wed, June 6 6-9:30p Free. Registration ends one week prior to class; prerequisite: Community Services Overview. Class prepares students to perform the tasks of an individual client services caseworker service associate. Attendance at parts 1 (Wed, May 30) and 2 are required. Participants are qualified to be Disaster Action Team members at the completion of this course. Register via e-mail or call 620.364.5547

Disaster Services Training--Shelter Operations Overview Wed, June 27 6-9:30p Free. Registration ends one week prior to class; prerequisite: Community Services Overview. Bob Ellis Memorial Tractor Show & Transportation Show, June 30th in Lebo. These annual events occur the Saturday before the Fourth of July. "Transportation Show" is open to any vehicle with wheels with awards for different classes. The Bob Ellis Memorial Tractor show features tractors of all kinds with awards for various categories. The fun begins at 9 a.m. Show your "wheels" for free or enter to win prizes (minimal entry fees). Click here for information on both events.

Cornet Chop Suey (a jazz band from St. Louis) Saturday, June 23rd at 7 p.m. in the Burlington High School Auditorium (Cross Street in Burlington) presented by the Coffey County Council for the Arts and Holtz Foundation. Tickets are $5 advance/$7 at the door. Advance tickets available at Hoover's Courtesy Desk or from an Arts Council Member. Farmer's Market The Farmer's Market is back for another season (May-October) beginning the first Friday in May. The market is open 4-7 p.m. Fridays in the Municipal Parking Lot north of the red caboose on 4th Street in Burlington. New vendors are always welcome. New Strawn Fishing Derby This annual, 24-hour fishing derby begins at 3 p.m. Friday, June 15th and runs through 3 p.m. Saturday, June 16th. Participants fish at the New Straw City Lake and can camp and fish all night. Fishing license required. Contact New Strawn City Hall for more information 620.364.8283.
