Who was Bob Ellis?
Bob was born in 1913 at the Ellis homestead, two miles southwest of Lebo, Kansas. He attended Prairie Queen rural school, one mile west of his home. He was a farmer all of his life. Starting with horses then moving to John Deere tractors in 1931 with his first Model D. In 1998, Bob was forced to retire after a stroke.
Bob never strayed from his beloved John Deeres, using two-cylinder tractors until retirement.
In the 1960s, a nephew asked him how many John Deere tractors he owned and operated. Bob wasn't sure so they went out to count just how many tractors were being used. There were 17 tractors in active use--all two-cylinder. Bob didn't like to spend time switching equipment. Each implement had its own designated tractor, just get on a different tractor and go!
Bob never married; he was totally dedicated to his farming. Bob passed away in 2000. He will always be known to the Lebo community as "Uncle Bob."
